China's largest textile and garment machinery mall now under construction in the outskirts of Shanghai will be put into operation in 2006 after completion of the first phase construction in October this year.
With a total investment of 1.15 billion yuan (US$142 million), the market covers an area of 410,000 square meters and will have a floor space of 500,000 square meters. The whole project is to be completed in three years.
The market will engage in the production, logistics, exhibition, R&D and industrial management of garment machinery, textile machinery and knitting machines. It aims to become a state-class industrial base and an international procurement center for textile machinery industry within a period of 5-10 years.
The production and consumption of textile and garment machinery and sewing equipment have increased sharply since Chinas entry to the WTO. The domestic demand exceeded US$26.14 billion worth in 2004, including more than US$7.45 billion worth of homemade machinery and US$18.69 billion from imports.
