South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has a long history of planting mulberry trees and raising silkworms and has great potential for producing high-yield cocoons and good quality silk. Backed by the national policies of “Mulberries from East to West” and “Farmland to Forest”, its sericulture and silk industry has grown rapidly during recent years. Till now, its cocoon output has ranked the second. Areas under mulberry has reached 1350000 mus.

Because of its comparative advantage in terms of weather, land, labor, and marketing, Gunagxi is developing a new sericulture and silk base for both domestic consumption and exports.

However, there isn’t enough silk processing capability in the region, its industrial output value of silk process only accounts for 0.5 per cent of national output. Thus large quantities of cocoons can’t be processed and value-added in Guangxi. Its silk industry still consists of mainly silk reeling millers despite of much effort. Currently, there are only about 40 silk reeling mills with 76920-thread capability and 0.69 billion Yuan total output value.

There is still a lot of potential for developing sericulture and silk. The Guangxi government nowadays very much emphasizes on promoting the development and is taking steps to promote and extend policy, technology, and financial assistance for the local silk industry.
