Huang Hai, Assistant Minister of Commerce, delivered a speech at the Press Conference of China International Silk Fair 2005 on September 14.
Ladies and Gentleman, and Friends from the Media,
The Ministry of Commerce and Hangzhou Municipal Government sponsor the press conference of China International Silk Fair 2005, on behalf of the Ministry of Commerce and organizing committee of the fair, I extend our warm welcome to our guests and friends.
As everyone knows, silk is a special and traditional industry in China with long history for thousands of years and stands for long and profound Chinese culture. Since reform and opening-up, Chinese silk industry kept fast development and becomes big country for silk production and export. Chinese silk industry came across difficulties in the development in the medium of 1990’s, however, after adjustment for 5 years, it turned loss to profits in 1999. Chinese silk industry kept steady development since entering into the period of "Tenth Five Years Plan",
First, production and sales keep growth. According to statistics from National Bureau of Statistics for over 2300 silk enterprises, total output of silk industry was US$70.6 billion in January through July, up by 19.1%; profit was US$ 1.6 billion, up by 16%; total volume of silk was 69.7 thousand tons, up by 23.3%, silk products were 4.3 billion meters, up by 5.3%.
Second, the export price and volume of silk increased. According to statistics from Customs, pure silk product export was US$ 1.755 billion, up by 22.1%.
Third, silkworm producing got great harvest. The overall situation of silkworm producing and purchasing was good than that in last year. According to statistics for 19 major provinces and cities, area of mulberry field reached 11.145 million mu, up by 2.15%; output of silkworm cocoon was 261.1 thousand tons, up by 11.48%; the average price of fresh cocoon amounted to 846.68 yuan per dan, 74.4 yuan higher than the price of last year, up by 11.14%; silkworm raiser increased income of RMB676 million yuan.
Currently, China is in the critical period of transaction from a big to strong silk country. Silk industry will attach great importance to transforming growth way, optimize industry structure, further strengthen macro guidance and control, market supervision, endeavor to promote reinvigorating trade through science and technology and brand strategy, expand international and domestic markets, guide and promote sound and steady development of silk industry. The elaborately planned silk fair will display new features of China's silk industry, expand market, increase consumption and build silk brand, and also an important and effective way to promote development of silk industry.
China International Silk Fair 2005 will be held in Hangzhou from October 20 to October 23, aiming at promoting and enhancing foreign and domestic exchange and cooperation, and expanding silk market. In order to raise reputation of the Fair, the Ministry of Commerce put it in the list of professional fair, taking advantages of policy and management, to make it become one of the top 6 fairs sponsored by MOFCOM. To further expand scale and effect of the fair, MOFCOM organized delegations to attract investment in Europe and South East Asia, make contact with 200 enterprises, 20 associations and agencies, set up initial cooperation with 10 associations and agencies, make a solid foundation for the fair to be internationalization, and raise international effect of China's silk industry.
I believe the silk fair will further promote exchange and cooperation of foreign and domestic silk industry, and promote trade and consumption growth, and affect development of Chinese and world silk industry.
