SAO PAULO (AFX) - China has agreed to limit its textile exports to Brazil after representatives of the two contries met on the sidelines of the World Trade Organisation meeting in Hong Kong, the Brazilian press said.
Brazilian overseas trade minister Luiz Fernando Furlan confirmed an agreement in principle under the terms of which China would agree to limit its exports of thread, synthetic and silk fabric, velvet, waistcoats, pullovers, embroidered fabric and woven shirts until 2008, official news agency Radiobras said.
'The agreement is well on its way,' said Furlan quoted by economic daily Valor, as he left a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Bo Xilai.
Brazilian imports of Chinese textiles increased by 46.5 pct over the first nine months of 2005 to 261.8 mln usd, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Textile Industries.
