Hiked cocoon price has greatly stimulated farmers’ enthusiasm in raising silkworm seeds. The price rises to above 40 yuan per box. Although seed price has been increased, no seed can be ordered currently in Zhejiang’s Jiaxing. Silkworm seed supply has become tight, says Jiaxing Sericulture Technology Station.
Local agricultural sector advised farmers to line up the seed immediately they would need some months ago. Till March 3, local farmers have ordered 388.8 thousand boxes of spring silkworm seeds, up by 24 per cent compared to same period of last year.
According to industry insiders, Jiaxing seed producers were plagued by bad weather and insect pressure last autumn. As a result, local seed production can’t meet the farmers’ demand. Local agricultural sector had no other way but to buy 170,000 boxes from other regions including Henan and Shandong, which accounts for 44 per cent of total order volume.
“Raisers who wait to buy until the day they need it will have to buy from seed traders without licenses, then the seed quality can’t be ensured,” says a local industry expert.
A seed shortage is seen in the nationwide including Anhui and Jiangsu.
