China's Southeastern area is struggling to recover form major typhoons to hit the area...But meanwhile, a severe drought is striking 13 provinces across China, affecting irrigation and drinking water supply for millions.
China's flood control and drought relief office has sent out five teams to the ravaged areas to help fight the disaster.
Latest figures show the total area in drought has decreased. However, the situation of drinking water supply in some areas is still worsening.
"Recent rains have helped reduce drought areas, but the relief work in some places is getting more and more difficult. Drinking water is in serious short supply."
In many regions of China, precipitation in this August is less than half of the past few years. The situation is particularly bad in Sichuan, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, with rain volume decreased by 90 percent. The water level in the upstream section of the Yangtze River has been lowered by six meters. Experts say a drought in the summer season is more harmful than that in any time of the year. The central government has released an aid fund to the most seriously struck areas, and is planning to give more help to other places.
