The Silk Mark Organization of India (SMOI) is determined to crack down on misuse of the labelling system under the silk mark scheme.
SMOI, a society sponsored by Central Silk Board (CSB), under central textile ministry has promised action against all entities, including SMOI members,guilty of violating or misusing the label granted under the silk mark scheme.
This action has been initiated by SMOI following complaints from major silk producers, a spokesman of the silk exporting firm Excell Fabrics said here today.
SMOI has promised to mediate or initiate action against all offender firms under the provisions of existing consumer protection laws, and also cancel the membership of violators another silk industry source told Business Standard.
The silk mark scheme is designed to protect the rights of silk consumers and users including traders, manufacturers and exporters of natural silk.
All these categories can become society members and licensed users of the silk mark by entering into a legal agreement with SMOI. After training, they can affix the labels and holograms on their silk products.
The labelling method devised by SMOI was tamper proof and had a high-security e-beam hologram with concealed features for maximum security, SMOI claimed.
The silk mark scheme was launched at Bangalore in June 2004 and will extended to cover the rest of the country in a phased manner.
The silk mark label can be used on primary, intermediary and finished products including raw silk yarn, garments, carpets etc. as long as they were made of pure silk.
SMOI said the silk mark was affixed only on genuine silk products with backing from CSB and interests of consumers were protected as it established the credibility of the product.
