WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Trade talks between the United States and China failed to reach a comprehensive textile agreement Thursday, the U.S. trade office said.
'The second round of talks with the Chinese aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement on textiles ended a short while ago,' said David Spooner, chief textile negotiator for the U.S. Trade Representative Robert Portman in Beijing. 'Despite our best efforts we were not able to reach a broader agreement. The United States remains optimistic that we can continue to make progress on the remaining issues.'
The United States said it would continue consultations with the Chinese over the next several days to decide when to host the next round of talks. But it remains to be seen whether a fifth round of talks will take place before the arrival of Chinese President Hu Jintao next week in Washington.
