The silk production in the country is expected to go up to 16,000 metric tonnes this year from 15,000 metric tonnes last year, a silk industry expert said here on October 12.
"We are way behind China in silk production which produces more than 65,000 metric tonnes, but several measures are being taken in India to enhance the production," said Vandana Kumar, chief executive, Silk Mark Organisation of India (Smoi), said during the exhibition-cum-sale of 'Silk Mark Expo Mumbai-2005' organised by the Mumbai chapter of Smoi.
About the measures being taken to enhance the production, she said that approximately 25,000 new silkworm races have been introduced apart from other measures.
"Our exports are comparatively very low because our production is low and we are still importing silk to the tune of 10,000 metric tonnes from China, so increasing our supplies is the key area which needs to be addressed," she added.
