MUMBAI:The Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI) on October 11 launched the six-day Silk Mark Expo Mumbai-2005.

Addressing a press conference here on October 11, SMOI Chief Executive Vandana Kumar said that Silk Mark, besides ensuring the purity of silk products, will play a multi-dimensional role in the overall promotion of Indian silk both in the domestic and export markets.

This is the first event of this kind in India where an Exhibition-cum-Sale is arranged with participation from the authorised users of Silk Mark.

The Mumbaikars will get an opportunity to see and feel the Silks of India brought by weavers direct from the weaving clusters all over India.

The special feature of this Expo is that only pure silk products duly labeled with Silk Mark are allowed to be displayed or sold.

Around 40 participants are registered for the Expo.

Silk weavers and co-operatives direct from the traditional weaving clusters across the country will participate in the Expo.

An exotic collection of silk products ranging from sarees, dress materials, made-ups, garments, furnishings are expected to be displayed.

Former beauty queen Yukta Mookhey inaugurated the expo.

The scheme accord paramount importance to setting in place impeccable standards for ensuring silk purity in the products and for the brand promotion of Indian silk.

Indian silk, for the first time, is acquiring a logo in the form of Silk Mark for its brand promotion. This has added significance in the present global silk scenario where no Silk Mark logo is available elsewhere with any of the silk producing nations or at the international level.

Karnataka is the biggest silk producing state in India, contributing around 60 per cent of the total prouction. Other major silk producing states are Tamil Nadu, Adhra Pradesh, West Bengal Jammu and Kashmir.

Silk export from India is to the tune of Rs 2500 crores per annum, she added.
