A technology Mission for Silk?is being worked out to boost production and tackle smuggling of raw silk and fabrics from neighbouring countries.
On the sidelines of the 20th Congress of the International Sericultural Commission (ISC), B P Singh, joint secretary (silks), today told reporters the mission is expected to focus on growth of the sector with emphasis on increasing production of quality silk for both the domestic and the international markets.
Currently, domestic consumption is around 25,000 tonne while production is static around 16,000 tonne. The sector provides employment to over 10 million people, mainly in the semi-arid and dry regions of the country, in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The sector, being unorganised and labour-intensive, needs emphasis in line with the government's effort to boost rural the economy,?said Singh.
Dr H Bhaskar, CEO and member secretary, the Central Silk Board, said India has a huge unsatisfied demand, and it is rapidly growing with the young generation showing a marked preference for designer-wear.
Besides the vast and growing domestic market, there is a huge opportunity for Indian silk exports. The country's exports for the April-August period (fiscal 2005-06) touched $259.69 million (Rs 1,132.01 crore) against $230.51 million (Rs 1,046.74 crore) in 2004-05.
