India:Govt to encourage Mulberry farmers in Mizoram

Mizoram Sericulture department has chalked out various plans to encourage farmers to give a boost in Mulberry farming area in the state.
Various government schemes under the sericulture area, especially mulberry farming, has already gained momentum, within short period of time, among the farmers and NGos in Mizoram, the state sericulture department officials said here today.
This boom in sericulture farming is clearly indicated by the fact that nearly 5000 families across the state have planted mulberry cuttings against the target of 500 families.
Various individuals and NGOs in the state, has come up with the idea of having their own sericulture farm in order to give employment to their jobless members and started planting more than 20,000 mulberry cuttings at the fringe end of their locality since 2004.
They also proceeded to the next step by constructing a rearing house with the help from the sericulture department, the officials pointed out adding under technical supervision of department a good number of youths are employed in the newly inaugurated rearing house.
Sericulture Minister K Sangthuma also arranged financial help for the farmers to buy building materials for the construction of the rearing house, they pointed out.
More than 20 lakhs mulberry cuttings were distributed to farmers across the region, they said adding to ensure a high quality yield, 500 farmers were also given training in sericulture farming.
The special Mulberry Development Scheme also implemented in the three Autonomous District Councils has also shown encouraging results, the officials said.
During 2005-2006, the Department will promote mulberry sericulture by giving assistance in the form of rearing appliances, land development, cultivation cost and provision of GCI sheets under Bamboo Flowering and Famine Combat Scheme (BAFFACOS), the officials added.
