India:Zargar visits Sericulture Nurseries at Patta and Tikri in Udhampur

UDHAMPUR, NOV-30, 2005 In order to stock of activities of Sericulture Department in Udhampur district, the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar inspected mulberry nursery at village Patta and Tikri in district Udhampur.
Director, Sericulture, Jammu, Additional Director, Sericulture and Deputy Director, Sericulture, also accompanied the Minister.
Addressing the officers of the Department on the occasion, the Minister stressed upon them to make efforts to boost co-coon production and improve mulberry plantation variety farming families to take to Sericulture activities. He also asked for distribution of hybrid silkworm seed to farmers to enhance productivity and standard of silk in the state.
The Director, Sericulture apprised that an amount of Rs.5.50 crore has been distributed among 23000 silk rearing families to give fillip to this industry. He said 11000 kgs of cocoon have been produced by this autumn, which was a remarkable achievement. The annual mulberry plant production, meant for distribution among farming community has risen to 13 lakhs, he said.
It was stated that cocoon production in the district had been of the order of 2.06 lakh kilogram this year against 1.66 lakh kilogram last year. Rs.1.64 crore has been distributed among 5700 silk rearing families of the district. 1166 and silk rearers have been provided kits and tin sheets for construction of rearing houses.
Mulberry nursery at Patta is spread over an area of 45 kanals, which produces nearly 35,000 mulberry plants annually it was stated He also divulged that average yield of co-coon at Basic Seed Station, Patta near Thathi is 75 kilogram per 100 Dfls (1 Ozs).
