“This event is a firm positive step towards the subject of global silk trade and it is believed that in near future, silk dealers all over the world can trade rapidly through CCSE”. Mr.Harsh Pal Kapoor, President of Silk Trade Association (Regd.) Varanasi remarked this while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the International Silk Forum and Study Tour organized by the China Cocoon and Silk Exchange in Jiaxing from May 21-23, 2006. Mr. Kapoor also spoke about the Indian Silk Industry, Global Silk Scenario, India’s Silk Trade with China and gave his suggestions for better trade relationship. He suggested “both countries should work towards consolidating their position to meet the silk requirement of the world instead of treating each other as competitors. He congratulated the CCSE and said that in recent years CCSE has become the price and information center of cocoon and silk industry, which has direct and indirect influence on the domestic and international market.
Some prominent silk traders from India and other countries attended the three-day study tour and discussed the problems in international silk trade at present and suggested the counter measures. The forum was also attended by the official of Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT), Zhejiang and Jiaxing Municipal Government officials and official from the Jiaxing Economic Development Zone and was well covered by the national and provincial print and television media. It was also well attended by local Chinese member companies of CCSE and representatives of various silk trading companies, factories and corporations.
Mr. Liu Jialin, President CCSE gave the welcome speech and throughout the forum personally supervised the comfort of all the participants. The officials of the CCSE introduced the functions and services of CCSE, electronic transaction and spot transaction. The major discussion was held about organizing international silk purchasing through the platform of CCSE that was well discussed by the participants and the CCSE President and other officials responded their queries.
Some overseas silk traders also expressed their views during their presentations and free discussion on the forum’s platform.
Mr. Anand Damani deliberated on the effects due to the implementation of the anti-dumping policy of the Indian Government on Chinese silk and on other issues concerning the trade. He also raised queries about the relationship of CCSE with other silk exchange.
Mr. Vaibhav Kapoor applauded the efforts of CCSE in organizing the forum and suggested that an actual visit to the exchange be arranged so that the participants can experience and understand the electronic trading more effectively. The CCSE President immediately accepted his suggestion and a visit was arranged the next morning during the trading sessions where all the overseas participants satisfied themselves with various queries relating to the functioning of the exchange and membership etc. Responding to Mr. Vaibhav’s query about electronic trading on other items like Tussah Silk, Doupion Silk and silk fabrics, Mr. Liu Jialin replied that these items could be considered in future after studying the feasibility.
Mr. Sen Naach and Ms. Helen Xie expressed serious concerns about the difficulty in fulfilling commitments due to the everyday changing price.
Mr. Suresh Mehta analyzed the present situation on silk trading and marketing in India and China and stressed that stability is the need of the hour. He opined that though the demand for Chinese silk fabrics could be hampered from India due to the anti-dumping but it should double the demand of Chinese Raw Silk. He also said that CCSE has brought transparency to the cocoon and raw silk trade.
Mr. Christoph Fritzsch expressed concerns about the silk production and cultivation in eastern China due to pollution and some of his queries were responded by the local silk producers. He also expressed his willingness to promote Silk and silk related news in Europe. Mr. A.D. Ditta and Mr. Hossien Barkhordarpour also made their self-recommendations.
Mr. Tom Gurney presented his research and study information on the Chinese Silk Industry with facts and figure from various sources and expressed the need for correct information as the information differed from different agencies.
Mr. Chandan Malhotra, Mr. Manmohan Malhotra and Mr. Rajesh Sharma also participated in the discussions and also actually tried to actually negotiate a spot transaction contract during the visit to the exchange.
All the international silk traders present expressed their willingness to give a try if the CCSE can involve clients beyond the border, which is a good start for the globalization of silk industry. It was agreed to hold such Silk Forum every year and promote the subject of International Silk Purchase through the platform of CCSE.
Though all the officials of the CCSE behaved as perfect hosts to the participants, but special efforts of Mr. Tan Shaorang (Fawlley) and Ms.Amanda Chen could be observed, as they were the communication channels for all the overseas participants because of their ability to communicate in English. Professional Interpreters were also engaged by the organizers who translated the speeches for the benefit of Chinese and overseas participants.
CCSE deserves applause for their sincere initial effort and their hospitality to guest participants. As said by Mr. Liu Jialin this forum could be remembered in the future of silk trading as a historic start.
