China’s Silk Product Imports and Exports in Jan.-Oct. 2022

The import and export situation of silk products in Jan.-Oct.

From January to October, the total import and export value of silk products was 1728 million dollars, up 25.58%, accounting for 0.58% of China’s total textile and apparel imports and exports.

The export value of pure silk products was 1424 million US dollars , a year-on-year increase of 36.89%, accounting for 0.51% of China's textile and apparel exports. During the same period, the export value of textile and apparel increased by 7%.

1.Export products structure

From January to October 2022, the proportion of silk exports on the three categories had no obvious change, maintaining an upward trend year-on-year. In this period, the export value of silk filament was 404 million dollars, soaring 97.13%, accounting for 28.38%, and the quantity of which was 7500 tons, growing 62.3%, with export unit price of 54.04 dollars/kilo, up 21.47%; silk fabrics amounted to 397 million dollars, growing 37.26%, accounting for 27.91%, with export unit price of 6.3 dollars/meter, up 5.18%; the exports of silk madeups totaled 622 million dollars, growing 14.06%, accounting for 43.71%. 

1.2 Major export markets

Silk product exports maintained an upward trend, while the growth to major export countries continued to narrow, the ranking of which remained unchanged from the previous month. The top five export markets were the EU (up 42.38%, accounting for 28%), the US (up 17.87%, accounting for 16.77%), India (up 227.99%, accounting for 11.4%), Japan (up 14.19%, accounting for 6.43%), Hong Kong, China (down 9.5%, accounting for 5.94%).

1.2.1 Export situation of silk filament

The ranking of the main export markets of silk filament had no change from the previous month. The EU’s share advantage was larger than India which ranked second, and the growth of both narrowed YOY. While the export growth of the US expanded YOY. The top five export markets were the EU (up 62.4%, accounting for 33.31%), India (up 331.36%, accounting for 31.79%), Japan (up 36.12%, accounting for 10.07%), Vietnam (up 304.74%, accounting for 8.47%), the US (up 24.59%, accounting for 2.43%).

1.2.2 Export situation of Silk fabrics

Except for the expansion to Sri Lanka market, the growth rate of silk fabrics exported to major markets declined, especially to Europe, which fell by about 20%. The decline in exports to Hong Kong continued to narrow. The top five export markets were the EU (up 56.23%, accounting for 28.92%), Pakistan (up 43.93%, accounting for 11.9%), India (up 70.94%, accounting for 8.37%), Sri Lanka (up 77.35%, accounting for 7.58%), Hongkong, China (down 44.27%, accounting for 5.98%).

1.2.3 Export situation of silk madeups

The ranking of main export markets of silk madeups was stable, in which the growth rate of the EU market and the US market continued to narrow. The top five export markets were the US (up 16.31%, accounting for 35.47%), the EU (up 20.71%, accounting for 23.97%), Hong Kong, China (up 22.03%, accounting for 9.69%), Japan (down 2.37%, accounting for 6.16%), the UK (down 7.55%, accounting for 5.98%).

1.3 Export situation of provinces and municipalities

The main export provinces and municipalities of silk products ranked stable, showing a year-on-year upward trend. Except for Shandong Province, the year-on-year export growth rate of other major provinces and municipalities showed a narrowing trend. The top five in order were Zhejiang (up 45.02%, accounting for 37.56%), Jiangsu (up 47.23%, accounting for 18.46%), Guangdong (up 37.95%, accounting for 11.36%), Shanghai (up 24.22%, accounting for 7.57%), Shandong (up 18.30%, accounting for 7.20%). The five provinces and municipalities above accounted for 82.15% of the total.

2. Import situation

From January to October, the import value of silk products was 304 million dollars, down 9.43% year-on-year, accounting for 1.56% of textiles and apparel. In the same period, the import value of textiles and apparel fell by 17.19%.

2.1 Import structure

The imports of the three major categories of silk continued the downward trend, in which the share of silk filament and silk fabrics grew slightly, silk madeups decreased slightly. The import value of silk filament was 51.2108 million dollars, dropping 14.79%, accounting for 16.84%, the quantity of which amounted to 5400 tons, dropping 13.19%, and the unit price of which fell by 1.86% to 9.48 dollars/kilo; the import of pure silk fabrics was 12.5442 million dollars, decreasing 24.26%, accounting for 4.13%, and the unit price of which jumped 8.24% to 13.92 dollars/meter; imports of silk madeups fell 7.24% to 240 million dollars, accounting for 79.03%.

2.2 Import situation of sources

The ranking of the main import sources of China's silk products has no change from last month. India still ranked second, and the decline of the EU and India expanded year-on-year. The top five import sources in order were the EU (down 7.91%, accounting for 72.39%), India (down 38.13%, accounting for 5.36%), China (down 23.96%, accounting for 4.87%), North Korea (up 383.44%, accounting for 3.88%), Uzbekistan (down 43.42%, accounting for 3.7%).

2.3 Import situation of provinces and municipalities

The ranking of the main provinces and municipalities of silk product imports had no change from the previous month, the share of which fluctuating slightly within a reasonable range. Details were as follows: Shanghai (down 8.67%, accounting for 73.66%), Zhejiang (down 25.79%, accounting for 7.97%), Guangdong (down 40.61%, accounting for 3.08%), Yunnan (up 3813.67%, accounting for 2.34%), Liaoning (up 243.05%, accounting for 2.21%). The five provinces and municipalities above accounted for 89.26% of the total.
