2.1 Export situation

The export value of pure silk products was 1699 million US dollars , a year-on-year increase of 25.93%, accounting for 0.51% of China's textile and apparel exports. During the same period, the export value of textile and apparel increased by 2.92%.

2.1.1 Export products structure

In 2022, China's exports of silk products continued to grow on the basis of the recovery in 2021, with a year-on-year increase of 26% throughout the year.

Among the three categories, silk filament exports increased the most up to 80%, and its export proportion also grew significantly compared with last year. Silk fabrics and silk madeups also showed a year-on-year growth trend, but their proportion declined, of which silk madeups fell more to about 7%.

The specific export data were: the export value of silk filament was 480 million dollars, soaring 79.78%, accounting for 28.25%, and the quantity of which was 8900 tons, growing 54.53%, with export unit price of 53.99 dollars/kilo, up 16.33%; silk fabrics amounted to 463 million dollars, growing 17.73%, accounting for 27.29%, with export unit price of 6.37 dollars/meter, up 3.07%; the exports of silk madeups totaled 756 million dollars, growing 9.74%, accounting for 44.46%.

2.1.2 Major export markets

In 2022, the export value of silk products increased by 26% year-on-year, which was basically the same as the previous year, and the export trend was generally upward.

From the perspective of monthly exports, the export value from May to July this year was the highest. Different from the obvious growth trend of export value in the fourth quarter of 2021, after reaching the peak of exports in June and July this year, the export value began to show a slight downward trend in August. In December, due to the adjustment of epidemic prevention and control policies, the export value declined both from last month and year instead of the usual year-end growth.

From the perspective of the ranking of major export markets, the first and second places of the EU and the United States were stable, but the share of the United States decreased by about 1.5% compared with last year. Japan still ranked fourth in the silk export markets, but the third and fifth places of the previous year swapped places that India jumped to third place with a year-on-year increase of 150% for the year, and Hong Kong, China fell to fifth, being the only market in the top five with a year-on-year decline. It is worth noting that exports to Vietnam increased significantly this year, and its ranking rose from 11th in 2021 to 7th.

The top five export markets were the EU (up 27.59%, accounting for 27.99%), the US (up 15.40%, accounting for 16.81%), India (up 150.35%, accounting for 11.01%), Japan (up 13.80%, accounting for 6.53%), Hong Kong, China (down 13.96%, accounting for 5.94%).

Export situation of silk filament

In 2022, the export value of silk filament increased by 80% year-on-year, which was the most among the three categories, and its proportion in the overall export increased by about 8.5% compared with last year.

In terms of major export markets, although the ranking of the top five major markets had no change from last year, the proportion changed significantly. This year, the export of silk filament to India and Vietnam surged, with year-on-year growth rates of 230% and 291% respectively, and their proportion of exports increased from 17% and 4% in 2021 to 30% and 9% respectively. At the same time, the EU was still China's largest silk export market, but its export share dropped by nearly 7% compared with last year, and the gap between EU and India, the second place, narrowed significantly.

Export situation of Silk fabrics

In 2022, silk fabric exports continued the upward trend of the previous year, but the year-on-year growth rate narrowed significantly from 45% to 18%.

In terms of export markets, silk fabric exports to major markets showed different increases except the export to Hong Kong, China market fell sharply. The share of Hong Kong market fell by nearly half in one year, falling from second place in 2021 to fifth. Three Southeast Asian countries-Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka rose one place from last year.

The top five export markets were the EU (up 26.06%, accounting for 27.53%), Pakistan (up 17.17%, accounting for 11.79%), India (up 33.21%, accounting for 8.64%), Sri Lanka (up 54.49%, accounting for 7.61%), Hongkong, China (down 41.17%, accounting for 6.56%).

Export situation of silk madeups

In 2022, China's exports of silk madeups generally showed a steady upward trend, which peaked in January and be less than half the next month, followed by a monthly climb before reaching the second peak in July and then gradually fell by the end of the year.

The top three major export markets of silk madeups remained unchanged from last year, while the UK fell from the fourth in 202 to sixth, and Japan and Australia both rose one place from last year to fourth and fifth. Among them, it is worth noting that exports to Japan continued to be sluggish in the first 10 months, but it increased significantly in November and December at the end of the year, and the proportion of exports to Japan in these two months exceeded 1/4.

The top five export markets were the US (up 14.29%, accounting for 35.01%), the EU (up 13.38%, accounting for 24.26%), Hong Kong, China (up 9.21%, accounting for 9.26%), Japan (up 5.35%, accounting for 6.61%), Australia (up 40.76%, accounting for 5.73%).

Among the top ten, Guangxi Province became the "dark horse" of this year's exports, with an annual export growth rate of 183%, rising from eleventh place last year to seventh place.
