In January, the total import and export value of silk products was 192 million US dollars, a decrease of 9.66% year-on-year, accounting for 0.68% of China's total import and export of textiles and apparel.

1.Silk product exports:

The export value of silk products was 167 million US dollars, a decrease of 4.45% year-on-year and an increase of 24.63%, accounting for 0.62% of China's textile and apparel exports. In the same period, the export value of textiles and apparel dropped by 18.28% YOY.

1.1The structure of export products

In the first month of 2023, the export of silk filament showed an increase YOY among the three major categories of silk, and silk fabrics and silk madeups decreased. Compared with the same period last year, the share of silk filament rose 8% and silk fabrics showed a significant decrease. In January, silk filament exports of 48 million US dollars, an increase of 35.83% YOY, accounting for 28.56%, with its export quantity reaching 842.04 tons, an increase of 24% YOY, and its export unit price was 51.72 US dollars / kg, an increase of 9.54%; silk fabrics export of 44 million US dollars, a decrease of 25.88% YOY, accounting for 26.16%, with its export unit price reaching 5.86 US dollars / meter, an increase of 6.16%; the export of silk madeups amounted to 76 million US dollars, a decrease of 6.32% YOY, accounting for 45.28%.

1.2Major export markets

The export value of silk products to major export markets were mixed. Exports to the EU, the US and India grew, among which the Indian market still showed the highest growth. On the contrary, exports to Japan and Pakistan declined significantly.

The top five markets were: the EU (50.7199 million US dollars, up 13.13%, accounting for 30.33%), the US (30.6183 million US dollars, up 1.5%, accounting for 18.31%), India (14.6959 million US dollars, up 43.42%, accounting for 8.79%), Japan (9.2731 million US dollars, down 22.61%, accounting for 5.54%), Pakistan (7.5818 million US dollars, down 39.79%, accounting for 4.53%).

1.2.1Silk filament export

Among the major export markets of silk products, exports to the EU, India and Vietnam increased significantly, among which exports to India increased by 119%, and to Japan and the US declined obviously. The top five markets were: the EU (22.5481 million US dollars, up 65.26%, accounting for 47.21%), India (10.3572 million US dollars, up 118.96%, accounting for 21.68%), Vietnam (5.2088 million US dollars, up 53.54%, accounting for 10.91%), Japan (3.2047 million US dollars, down 28.08%, accounting for 6.71%), the US (0.955 million US dollars, down 35.5%, accounting for 2%).

1.2.2Silk fabrics export

In addition to the surge in exports to Turkey, silk fabrics export to major markets all fell sharply year-on-year. The top five countries and regions were: the EU (10.0855 million US dollars, down 22.55%, accounting for 23.05%), Pakistan (7.4043 million US dollars, down 34.25%, accounting for 16.93%), India (4.172 million US dollars, down 23.64%, accounting for 9.54%), Sri Lanka (3.9654 million US dollars, down 28.75%, accounting for 9.06%), Turkey (2.9085 million US dollars, up 159.6%, accounting for 6.65%).

1.2.3Silk madeups export

In January, exports of silk madeups to major markets were mixed, in which exports to the US market grew slightly. The top five countries and regions were: the US (28.8096 million US dollars, up 3.65%, accounting for 38.04%), the EU (18.0863 million US dollars, down 0.45%, accounting for 23.88%), Hong Kong (6.5761 million US dollars, down 23.60%, accounting for 8.68%), Japan (4.702 million US dollars, down 14.14%, accounting for 6.21%), Australia (4.636 million US dollars, up 3.07%, accounting for 6.12%).

1.3Exports by provinces and municipalities
Among the main export provinces and municipalities, Jiangsu and Guangdong increased, and Guangxi Province showed a surge of 370.45%. 2.Silk product imports:

In January, the import value of silk products was 24.9479 million US dollars, a decrease of 33.85% year-on-year, accounting for 1.81% of the import value of textiles and apparel. In the same period, the import value of textiles and apparel fell by 41.32% year-on-year.

2.1The structure of import products

The imports of the three major categories all decreased to varying degrees year-on-year, among which silk filament fell the most to 55.73% year-on-year. Silk filament imports of 3.3474 million US dollars, a decrease of 55.73% YOY, accounting for 13.42%, import quantity of 3.6833 tons, a decrease of 61.54%, import unit price of 9.09 US dollars / kg, an increase of 15.21%; silk fabrics imports of 1.3122 million US dollars, a decrease of 13.06%, accounting for 5.26%, import unit price of 14.84 US dollars / meter, an increase of 2.49%; Imports of silk madeups amounted to 20.2882 million US dollars, a decrease of 29.17% YOY, accounting for 81.32%.

2.2Import sources
In January, China's imports of pure silk products from the European Union, the largest source, fell significantly, down by 28.32%, and imports from India and Uzbekistan increased sharply year-on-year.
The top five sources of silk product imports were: the EU (19.3722 million US dollars, down 28.32%, accounting for 77.65%), India (1.3271 million US dollars, up 20.47%, accounting for 5.32%), China (0.9517 million US dollars, down 49.65%, accounting for 3.81%), Uzbekistan (0.9338 million US dollars, up 84.7%, accounting for 3.74%),  North Korea (0.4739 million US dollars, down 91.52%, accounting for 1.90%).  
2.3Import situation of provinces and municipalities

In January, silk product imports of Shaanxi Province surged to 5546.7%, jumping to the third place, of which silk filament accounted for more than 70%.

The details were as follows: Shanghai (19.3854 million US dollars, down 27%, accounting for 77.7%), Zhejiang (2.2186 million US dollars, up 40.88%, accounting for 8.89%), Shaanxi (0.6167 million US dollars, up 5546.71%, accounting for 2.47%),  Beijing (0.5133 million US dollars, up 40.05%, accounting for 2.06%), Guangdong (0.4862 million US dollars, down 56.51%, accounting for 1.95%). The total imports of the top 5 provinces and municipalities accounted for 93.07% of the total national imports.
