Silk product imports and exports in Jan.-Apr. 2023

From January to April, the total import and export value of silk products was 609 million dollars, down 3.11%, accounting for 0.6% of China’s total textile and apparel imports and exports.

1Export situation

The export value of pure silk products was 503 million US dollars , a year-on-year decrease of 1.02%, accounting for 0.53% of China's textile and apparel exports. During the same period, the export value of textile and apparel decreased by 2.9%.

1.1Export product structure

Among the three categories, export of silk fabrics showed a decrease in the first four months of 2023 compared with last year, both silk filament and silk madeups increased with no significant change in proportion. From January to April, the export value of silk filament was 148 million dollars, jumping 12.61%, accounting for 29.38%, and the quantity of which was 2588.89 tons, growing 8.25%, with its export unit price of 57.14 dollars/kilo, up 4.04%; silk fabrics amounted to 132 million dollars, dropping 17.29%, accounting for 26.19%, with its export unit price of 6.65 dollars/meter, growing 5.72%; the export of silk madeups totaled 224 million dollars, jumping 2.66%, accounting for 44.43%.

1.2Major export markets

The export of silk products to the European and American markets maintained a slight growth, and export to India turned from rising to falling. The top five export markets in order were: the EU (146 million US dollars, up 1.19%, accounting for 29.02%), the US (88.6794 million US dollars, up 6.12%, accounting for 17.61%), India (42.5806 million US dollars, down 11.09%, accounting for 8.46%), Japan (31.9368 million US dollars, down 3.03%, accounting for 6.34%), Hong Kong, China (22.6551 million US dollars, down 14.49%, accounting for 4.50%).

1.2.1Export situation of Silk filament

In the main export markets of silk filament, exports to the EU market maintained substantial growth. Affected by the 45% year-on-year decline in export value in April, the cumulative export of silk to India turned from rising to falling. The top five export markets in order were: the EU (62.0584 million US dollars, up 33.71%, accounting for 41.95%), India (30.6271 million US dollars, down 11.72%, accounting for 20.71%), Vietnam (16.5268 million US dollars, up 35.27%, accounting for 11.17%), Japan (14.3325 million US dollars, down 1.16%, accounting for 9.69%), the US (4.4944 million US dollars, up 58.09%, accounting for 3.04%).

1.2.2Export situation of Silk fabrics

In the main export markets of silk fabrics, Turkey and Hong Kong saw significant year-on-year growth, and exports to the EU still fell by about 30% year-on-year. The top five export markets in order were: the EU (33.5762 million US dollars, down 30.88%, accounting for 25.47%), Pakistan (15.9936 million US dollars, down 35.68%, accounting for 12.13%), India (11.1822 million US dollars, down 13.74%, accounting for 8.48%), Sri Lanka (9.7702 million US dollars, down 21.55%, accounting for 7.41%), Korea (7.8633 million US dollars, up 6.8%, accounting for 5.96%).

1.2.3Export situation of silk madeups

Exports of silk madeups to the European and American markets maintained a slight increase, exports to Hong Kong declined significantly, and exports to Australia declined in growth rate. Meanwhile, exports to Singapore continued last year's high growth trend, accounting for an increasing proportion.

The top five export markets in order were: the US (81.8858 million US dollars, up 4.51%, accounting for 36.61%), the EU (50.4746 million US dollars, up 2.17%, accounting for 22.56%), Hong Kong, China (16.6549 million US dollars, down 27.33%, accounting for 7.45%), Australia (14.7219 million US dollars, up 30.69%, accounting for 6.58%), Japan (13.4779 million US dollars, down 1.49%, accounting for 6.03%).

1.3Export situation of provinces and municipalities

The export of silk products from major provinces and municipalities were mixed, with stable rankings. The top five in order were: Zhejiang (174 million US dollars, down 10.5%, accounting for 34.60%), Jiangsu (95 million US dollars, up 3.13%, accounting for 18.88%), Guangdong (53.8531 million US dollars, up 6.5%, accounting for 10.7%), Shanghai (44.0528 million US dollars, up 24.1%, accounting for 8.75%), Shandong (36.4566 million US dollars, down 4.9%, accounting for 7.24%). The five provinces and municipalities above accounted for 80.17% of the total.

2.Import situation

From January to April, the import value of silk products was 106 million US dollars, down 11.94% year-on-year, accounting for 1.61% of the total textile and apparel imports which fell by 17.04% in the same period.

2.1Import structure

The three major categories of imports still maintained the trend of increase in silk fabrics and decline in silk filament and silk madeups, with no obvious change in proportion. The import value of silk filament was 14.6352 million dollars, dropping 23.5%, accounting for 13.83%, the quantity of which amounted to 1515.96 tons, dropping 21.06%, and the unit price of which dropped by 3.11% to 9.65 dollars/kilo; the import of pure silk fabrics was 5.3483 million dollars, increasing 1.23% YOY, accounting for 5.05%, and the unit price of which dropped 31.77% to 10.76 dollars/meter; Imports of silk madeups fell 18.95% to 64.4909 million dollars, accounting for 80.79%.

2.2Import situation of sources

China's imports from India and Uzbekistan continued to increase, from other countries showed declines of varying magnitudes, and from the EU narrowed on decline. Among them, the monthly import value from India in April showed a year-on-year surge of 182%, which led to a significant increase in the cumulative import growth from India.

The top five import sources in order were: the EU (80.043 million US dollars, down 10.9%, accounting for 75.65%), India (6.9757 million US dollars, up 49.87%, accounting for 6.59%), China (4.9532 million US dollars, down 9.34%, accounting for 4.68%), Uzbekistan (3.7132 million US dollars, up 12.82%, accounting for 3.51%), Korea (2.1677 million US dollars, down 67.17%, accounting for 2.05%).

 2.3Import situation of provinces and municipalities

Among the major provinces and municipalities that import silk products from China, the decline in imports from Shanghai narrowed by nearly half, Hainan rose to fifth, and Shaanxi Province dropped to seventh. The details were as follows: Shanghai (79.8279 million US dollars, down 10.08%, accounting for 75.44%), Zhejiang (9.5726 million US dollars, up 36.1%, accounting for 9.05%), Guangdong (4.0312 million US dollars, up 5.45%, accounting for 3.81%), Beijing (2.0297 million US dollars, down 14.61%, accounting for 1.92%), Hainan (1.5108 million US dollars, down 33.16%, accounting for 1.43%).
