Silk product imports and exports in Jan.-Jun. 2023From January to June, the total import and export value of silk products was 921 million dollars, down 9.49%, accounting for 0.58% of China’s total textile and apparel imports and exports.
1. Export situation
The export value of pure silk products was 757 million US dollars , a year-on-year decrease of 9.93%, accounting for 0.51% of China's textile and apparel exports. During the same period, the export value of textile and apparel decreased by 7.15%.
1.1Export product structure
Affected by the sharp decline in exports in May and June, the cumulative exports of the three categories in the first half of the year all decreased by different magnitudes year-on-year. Among them, silk fabrics which had been showing a downward trend in exports in the first half of the year fell the most, reaching 20%. Silk filament and silk madeups which increased year-on-year in the first quarter showed a trend from rising to falling in the second quarter.
From January to June, the export value of silk filament was 224 million dollars, falling 8.27%, accounting for 29.56%, and the quantity of which was 3945.16 tons, dropping 12.53%, with unit price of 56.71 dollars/kilo, up 4.86%; silk fabrics amounted to 194 million dollars, dropping 20.3%, accounting for 25.59%, with unit price of 6.66 dollars/meter, growing 4.39%; the export of silk madeups totaled 339 million dollars, dropping 3.96%, accounting for 44.85%.The ailing general exports of silk products in June drove the export situation in the first half of the year to continue to decline, in which the cumulative export value in Jan.- Jun. fell the most YOY, reaching 9.93%. Among them, the decline in exports to the EU expanded, to India expanded to 33.6%, and the growth rate of exports to the United States narrowed to 0.13%.The top five export markets in order were: the EU (223 million US dollars, down 5.81%, accounting for 29.43%), the US (134 million US dollars, up 0.13%, accounting for 17.76%), India (64.5623 million US dollars, down 33.62%, accounting for 8.53%), Japan (47.5742 million US dollars, down 9.84%, accounting for 6.29%), Hong Kong, China (36.5231 million US dollars, down 23.98%, accounting for 4.83%).1.2.1 Export situation of Silk filamentIn the main export markets of silk filament, the year-on-year export growth rate to the European Union, Vietnam and the United States continued to narrow, while the decline to India and Japan also showed a narrowing trend, and the ranking had no change. The top five export markets in order were: the EU (94.9124 million US dollars, up 19.74%, accounting for 42.42%), India (45.6802 million US dollars, down 40.91%, accounting for 20.42%), Vietnam (25.2698 million US dollars, up 15.46%, accounting for 11.29%), Japan (22.0758 million US dollars, down 8.16%, accounting for 9.87%), the US (6.643 million US dollars, up 40.67%, accounting for 2.97%).1.2.2 Export situation of Silk fabricsAmong the main export markets of silk fabrics, only Turkey and Hong Kong, China maintained YOY growth, and the growth rate narrowed. Hong Kong rose to fifth, while Turkey fell back to sixth. The year-on-year decline in exports to the EU continued to expand.The top five export markets in order were: the EU (46.5368 million US dollars, down 35.38%, accounting for 24.03%), Pakistan (20.0619 million US dollars, down 43.1%, accounting for 10.36%), India (18.0245 million US dollars, down 8.37%, accounting for 9.31%), Sri Lanka (13.5185 million US dollars, down 16.63%, accounting for 6.98%), Hong Kong, China (12.1166 million US dollars, up 33.25%, accounting for 6.26%).1.2.3 Export situation of silk madeupsExcept for the growth in exports of silk madeups to Australia, exports to other major markets declined by varying degrees.The top five export markets in order were: the US (124 million US dollars, down 1.3%, accounting for 36.48%), the EU (81.2435 million US dollars, down 4.59%, accounting for 23.94%), Hong Kong, China (24.1996 million US dollars, down 37.26%, accounting for 7.13%), Australia (21.6444 million US dollars, up 29.7%, accounting for 6.38%), Japan (19.4279 million US dollars, down 9.21%, accounting for 5.72%).1.3 Export situation of provinces and municipalitiesAmong the main export provinces and municipalities of silk products, only Shanghai still increased year-on-year, and the exports of Jiangsu and Guangdong turned from rising to falling. The top five provinces and municipalities ranked stable. At the same time, Guangxi and Fujian maintained high growth.The top five in order were: Zhejiang (265 million US dollars, down 17.19%, accounting for 34.95%), Jiangsu (147 million US dollars, down 2.4%, accounting for 19.42%), Guangdong (85.1849 million US dollars, down 10.71%, accounting for 11.26%), Shanghai (64.9796 million US dollars, up 8.73%, accounting for 8.59%), Shandong (51.8463 million US dollars, down 11.64%, accounting for 6.85%). The five provinces and municipalities above accounted for 81.07% of the total.From January to June, the import value of silk products was 164 million US dollars, down 7.38% year-on-year, accounting for 1.61% of the total textile and apparel imports which fell by 13.75% in the same period.
The three major categories of imports still maintained growth in silk fabrics and decline in silk filament and silk madeups, with no obvious change in proportion. The import value of silk filament was 23.397 million dollars, dropping 11.67%, accounting for 14.22%, the quantity of which amounted to 2432.82 tons, dropping 5.16%, and the unit price of which dropped by 6.87% to 9.62 dollars/kilo; the import of pure silk fabrics was 8.2927 million dollars, increasing 7.36% YOY, accounting for 5.04%, and the unit price of which dropped 22.19% to 11.92 dollars/meter; Imports of silk madeups fell 7.38% to 133 million dollars, accounting for 80.73%.
2.2 Import situation of sourcesAmong the main import sources of China's silk products, imports from India and Uzbekistan still maintained a high growth rate, and the decline in imports from the EU expanded. The ranking of the top five import sources had no change.The top five import sources in order were: the EU ( 123 million US dollars, down 7.58%, accounting for 75%), India (12.1516 million US dollars, up 54.74%, accounting for 7.39%), China (8.5806 million US dollars, down 0.31%, accounting for 5.22%), Uzbekistan (4.9145 million US dollars, up 30.64%, accounting for 2.99%), North Korea (3.2518 million US dollars, down 50.75%, accounting for 1.98%).2.3 Import situation of provinces and municipalitiesAmong the main provinces and municipalities of silk imports in China, Shanghai’s imports rate turned down again year-on-year, Zhejiang and Guangdong’s growth rate expanded, and Hainan Province rose to fifth. Details were as follows: Shanghai (124 million US dollars, down 5.58%, accounting for 75.64%), Zhejiang (14.4189 million US dollars, up 43.78%, accounting for 8.77%), Guangdong (7.3283 million US dollars, up 16.03%, accounting for 4.04%), Beijing (3.3071 million US dollars, down 11.69%, accounting for 2.01%), Hainan (2.2753 million US dollars, down 17.78%, accounting for 1.38%). The five provinces and municipalities above accounted for 92.26% of the total.
